Info R-Ladies

Dear All,

We, a small group of PhD students from the University of Göttingen, are currently reviving our local „R-Ladies“ group. R is a programming language & free software environment for statistical computing and graphics, used and developed by data scientists, researchers, and others around the globe.

What is R-Ladies?

RLadies is a worldwide organization whose mission is to promote Gender Diversity in the R community. The R community suffers from an underrepresentation of minority genders (including but not limited to cis/trans women, trans men, non-binary, genderqueer, agender) in every role and area of participation, whether as leaders, package developers, conference speakers, conference participants, educators, or users.

As a diversity initiative, the mission of R-Ladies is to achieve proportionate representation by encouraging, inspiring, and empowering people of genders currently underrepresented in the R community. R-Ladies‘ primary focus, therefore, is on supporting minority gender R enthusiasts to achieve their programming potential, by building a collaborative global network of R leaders, mentors, learners, and developers to facilitate individual and collective progress worldwide.“ (from RLadies.org)

What are we planning to do?

R-Ladies is a global organization that is organized in local groups in over 197 cities / 56 countries worldwide (some stats).  Our plan is to revive the 2019 started local „chapter“ in Göttingen. To provide a community of R users and learners at any stage of „proficiency“ or experience background, developers, mentors and trainers from diverse backgrounds (academics and non-academics). Our broad goal is to:

Get involved in RCommunity online: Connect with other groups over Twitter, Slack, Meet-up platform, e-mail etc. pp.
Create a community in Göttingen in which we support each other and exchange on our experiences, skills, issues and progress with R (regular meet-ups, shared resources on GitHub etc.)
Organize events such as talks and workshops amongst ourselves or with invited speakers (currently online, but hopefully sometime in person again)

Note that RLadies group Göttingen (just as RLadies Global) is open to all genders, but specifically aims to promote women and minority genders in the R community & adheres to the RLadies Code of Conduct.

How can you get involved?

If you are interested to
Be updated on how the local group develops
Potentially participate in a future event organized by the local R-Ladies group Göttingen (participation in any R-Ladies events is always free of charge)
Potentially participate in regular meetups or discussion groups
Share R resources, support other users and R learners
Give a talk or workshop or know someone who might
Give advice or offer help on funding or meet-up locations in Göttingen
Become part of the organizing team

 Please fill out this form

At the moment and due to the pandemic,  we plan our group events as virtual meetings. Your feedback on the form is thus essential for us to shape the group and its activities accordingly.

We are looking forward to your responses and getting to know you!

Cheers and happy coding,
Neele, Laura & Annika
